The NTIA's decision to disallow private domain name registrations for .us domains threatens your privacy Return to Home

A Credit Card Theft Victim

I buy and sell items on eBay, plus I have my own eBay store. I use my domain name to 'point" to my eBay store. I also use my email address associated with this domain for when I decide to buy something on eBay.

Not long ago, I made an eBay purchase and paid by credit card. I thought the seller was legitimate (and had no reason to question him), so when I paid by credit card, I gave my credit card number, expiration date, and email address - just like you would when making any purchase online.

The seller looked up the Whois information for my domain and obtained by home address. He then took my address, together with my credit card info and started making online purchases. This was easy because the online stores required address verification to confirm my credit card. And of course, he had it because he had my address from the Whois.

If my domain had privacy on it, then this joker never would have been able to purchase online because he couldn't have provided the necessary address verification. Now, all my domains have privacy. It gives me real peace of mind and I'll never register a domain again without it.
